Understanding our community is the first step toward change.

Homelessness is a complex issue, and solutions can fall short without accurate data. Many community members, policymakers, and organizations want to help but struggle to understand the full scope of the crisis. They ask: How many people are experiencing homelessness? Who is experiencing it, and where?

How can you help?

You play a critical role in answering these questions by partnering with Sacramento Steps Forward (SSF), the lead agency for the Sacramento Continuum of Care (CoC), during the biennial Point-in-Time (PIT) Count.

Every other year, SSF conducts a PIT Count of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness in our community during the last week of January. Every year, a count of those experiencing sheltered homelessness is also conducted. These are required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to receive federal funding and enable Sacramento to improve how we respond as a community.

We rely on volunteers to collect information. No experience, money, or expertise is required. We provide training and equipment to prepare you to be part of an organized team. Together, your group will go to one or more designated areas and log information on where people are experiencing homelessness. If they are willing to share, you will ask questions that have been designed to glean more information.

This year, we’re aiming for 1,000 volunteers to help out.

Now is the time to get involved. As we prepare for the PIT Count, we are organizing, training, and equipping volunteers to take part in one of the most important community efforts of the year to address homelessness.
